What is a Dental Crown ?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a damaged, decayed, or weakened tooth, restoring its shape, size, strength, and appearance. It fully covers the visible portion of the tooth above the gumline.

Modern porcelain and zirconia crowns are matched precisely to the color and texture of your surrounding teeth, making them virtually indistinguishable from natural enamel. They are used for both restorative purposes and cosmetic improvement, making them one of the most versatile procedures in dentistry.

  • A tooth has been weakened by a large filling or root canal

  • You have significant decay that cannot be addressed with a standard filling

  • You want to improve the shape or color of a tooth that cannot be corrected with whitening or bonding

  • You need to cap a dental implant with a natural-looking final restoration

What to Expect During Your dental crown Treatment

step by step Procedure

Evaluation and Planning

We assess the condition of the tooth, take X-rays, and determine the appropriate crown material for your case. If underlying issues like infection or decay need to be addressed first, those are completed before crown placement begins.

Tooth Preparation

The tooth is shaped under local anesthesia to create room for the crown. A digital scan or impression is taken and sent to the lab. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth while your permanent crown is being made.

Crown Fabrication

Your permanent crown is custom fabricated in a dental lab using porcelain, zirconia, or a combination matched to your natural tooth color. This process typically takes one to two weeks.

Permanent Crown Placement

At your second appointment the temporary is removed, the permanent crown is checked for fit and color, adjusted if needed, and cemented permanently in place. The result is immediate and the tooth is fully functional.

How Much Does a Dental Crown Cost in Manhattan?

The final cost depends on the material selected, the complexity of the preparation, and whether any additional treatment is needed first. Dental Crown FAQs

How long do dental crowns last?

With proper care, porcelain and zirconia crowns typically last 10 to 15 years or longer. Longevity depends on oral hygiene, bite forces, and whether you grind your teeth. Regular checkups help catch issues before they affect the crown.

Does getting a crown hurt?

The preparation is done under local anesthesia so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some mild sensitivity around the prepared tooth is common in the days following but typically resolves quickly.

Is a crown better than a large filling?

For teeth with significant damage or decay, yes. Large fillings leave more of the natural tooth exposed and vulnerable to fracture. A crown fully encases the tooth, distributes bite force more evenly, and protects it long term.

Will my crown match my other teeth?

Yes. Crowns are custom shade-matched to the surrounding teeth. Porcelain and zirconia replicate the translucency of natural enamel closely enough that in most cases no one can distinguish the crown from your natural teeth.

Dental Implants

Replace missing teeth with natural-looking implants that restore function and confidence.

Porcelain Veneers

For teeth that are intact but cosmetically imperfect, veneers are a less invasive alternative to crowns that require less tooth preparation while still transforming the appearance.

Smile Makeover

Crowns are frequently part of a broader smile makeover plan. If multiple teeth need attention, a coordinated approach delivers a more uniform and intentional final result.
