What is a Sinus Lift ?

A sinus lift, also called sinus augmentation, is a surgical procedure that increases bone volume in the upper jaw by gently lifting the sinus membrane and placing bone graft material in the space created beneath it.

The upper jaw is naturally thinner than the lower jaw, and tooth loss causes the sinuses to expand downward over time, leaving even less room for implants. A sinus lift corrects this by rebuilding the bone height needed for secure implant placement.

are you a CANDIDATE ?

A sinus lift may be recommended before upper jaw implant placement if any of these apply:

  • You are missing upper back teeth and want implants

  • You have been told the upper jaw lacks bone for implants

  • Your sinuses sit too close to the jaw for safe implant placement without augmentation

  • You have experienced significant bone loss in the upper jaw from long-term tooth loss or gum disease

  • A previous upper jaw implant failed and the site needs rebuilding

What to Expect During Your All-on-6 Treatment

step by step Procedure

A precise, personalized process designed for full arch restoration and lasting results

Consultation and Planning

Cone beam CT imaging maps your sinus anatomy and bone levels precisely. This tells us how much lift is needed and confirms there are no sinus conditions that could complicate the procedure.

Sinus Membrane Elevation

A small opening is made in the gum to access the jawbone. A gentle instrument lifts the sinus membrane upward, creating space between the membrane and the bone below.

Bone Graft Placement

Bone graft material is carefully packed into the space created under the lifted membrane. The site is then closed and allowed to heal. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia with sedation available.

Final Arch Placement

Over 4 to 9 months the graft integrates with your existing bone. Once fully healed, implant placement proceeds. In some cases the implant can be placed during the same appointment as the sinus lift.

Benefits

BENEFITS of a sinus lift

Makes Upper Jaw Implants Possible

Patients who were told upper jaw implants are not possible due to bone loss are often candidates after a sinus lift.

A Proven Procedure

Sinus lift surgery has a well-documented track record and is one of the most commonly performed pre-implant procedures for the upper jaw.

Performed In House

Dr. Kramer performs sinus lifts on site. Your grafting and implant placement are coordinated by the same clinical team with no external referrals.

Sometimes Same Day as Implants

In cases with sufficient existing bone, the sinus lift and implant placement can be completed in a single surgical appointment, shortening your overall timeline.

Benefits

Full Arch Restoration

All-on-6 replaces an entire arch of missing teeth with one fixed, comprehensive solution — upper, lower, or both.

Superior Stability

Six implants distribute bite force more evenly across the jaw than fewer-implant solutions — providing a more natural feel and greater long-term stability.

No Dentures Required

Your new arch is permanently fixed — no removal at night, no adhesives, no slipping, no dietary restrictions.

Long-Term Results

With proper care and regular checkups, dental implants are designed to be a long-term solution. Results vary by patient, and our team will give you an honest assessment of what to expect during your consultation.

Sinus Lift FAQs

Is a sinus lift painful?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia so discomfort during surgery is minimal. Mild swelling and soreness in the days after are common and typically managed with over-the-counter medication. Sedation is available for anxious patients.

How long does it take to heal after a sinus lift?

Most patients heal within 7 to 10 days for initial recovery. Full bone integration of the graft takes 4 to 9 months before implants can be placed, depending on the amount of bone added.

Can both sides be treated at the same time?

In many cases yes. Bilateral sinus lifts can be performed in the same session, which reduces the number of surgical appointments and healing periods. Dr. Kramer will advise based on your imaging and overall health.

Will a sinus lift affect my breathing or sinuses long term?

No. The procedure takes place below the sinus floor and does not interfere with sinus function. Patients do not experience long-term changes to breathing or sinus health when the procedure is performed correctly.
