Receding gums expose your roots and accelerate bone loss. Grafting stops the damage and restores your gumline.
(5-star rating from our smiling customers.)

Gum grafting is a surgical procedure that transfers healthy tissue to areas where the gums have receded, covering exposed tooth roots and rebuilding the protective seal around the teeth. It stops further recession and protects the underlying bone from continued deterioration.
Recession is common and often gradual — many patients do not notice it until roots are visibly exposed or sensitivity develops. Left untreated, receding gums increase the risk of root decay, bone loss, and eventually tooth loss. Grafting is one of the most predictable and well-documented procedures in periodontics.

Dr. Rani assesses the extent of recession, identifies the cause, and determines the most appropriate graft type for your case. The three main options are connective tissue grafts, free gingival grafts, and pedicle grafts depending on your anatomy and goals.

For connective tissue and free gingival grafts, a small amount of tissue is taken from the palate. This donor site heals quickly and completely. Pedicle grafts use tissue from healthy gum adjacent to the recession site.

The graft tissue is carefully positioned over the exposed root surface and secured with sutures. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and most patients report feeling pressure but no significant pain during the surgery.

Initial healing takes 1 to 2 weeks. Most patients return to normal activities within a few days on a soft food diet. Full tissue integration takes several weeks to months and the final gumline position is permanent.

Grafting covers vulnerable root surfaces, reducing sensitivity and protecting against root decay that is significantly more difficult to treat than crown decay.

Grafting reinforces the gumline with additional tissue thickness, making it more resistant to further recession from brushing, disease, or other causes.

Without gum tissue to protect it, the bone surrounding the tooth root is exposed to bacterial damage. Grafting restores that protective barrier.

Once the graft integrates and heals, the result is permanent. The restored gumline does not revert and provides lasting protection with proper home care.

All-on-6 replaces an entire arch of missing teeth with one fixed, comprehensive solution — upper, lower, or both.

Six implants distribute bite force more evenly across the jaw than fewer-implant solutions — providing a more natural feel and greater long-term stability.

Your new arch is permanently fixed — no removal at night, no adhesives, no slipping, no dietary restrictions.

With proper care and regular checkups, dental implants are designed to be a long-term solution. Results vary by patient, and our team will give you an honest assessment of what to expect during your consultation.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia so you should not feel pain during surgery. Mild soreness at the graft site and donor site is expected for several days after. Most patients manage comfortably with over-the-counter pain medication.
Most patients feel comfortable returning to work and light activity within 2 to 3 days. Soft foods are recommended for 1 to 2 weeks. Full integration of the graft tissue takes several weeks to months depending on the case.
Connective tissue grafts, the most common type, are taken from beneath the surface of the palate and provide excellent color and texture matching with the surrounding gum tissue. Most patients are satisfied with how natural the result looks.
If the underlying cause of recession is addressed, the graft result is stable and long term. If aggressive brushing, gum disease, or other causes continue unchecked, further recession is possible. Dr. Rani addresses the cause as part of every treatment plan.

Active gum disease must be treated and stabilized before grafting is performed.

After grafting, consistent maintenance visits protect the result and monitor for any new recession before it progresses.

For patients whose recession is primarily cosmetic rather than disease-driven, gum contouring under our cosmetic dentistry services may be a simpler alternative worth discussing.
